A major makeover of the historic 94-year-old Caxton Block Building breathed new life into a three-story downtown landmark and produced an upscale office complex with distinctive space, ample parking and a link to Moline's downtown and a waterfront recreation trail. Shive-Hattery to provide site and building design services for renovation of the exterior and interior of the 43,500-square-foot brick building.
The second floor features a two-story, 45-foot-high glass atrium that brings in natural light. Curved walls along the main corridor reinforce a feeling of motion. The original open ceiling was painted white and exposed brick walls are visible in several areas. The colors and finishes present a creative yet subdued atmosphere. Moss green, dark purple and cream are the main colors and the wood finishes are clear nature maple.
There are three conference rooms, one of which is a creative-style conference area with five modern overstuffed chairs and a coffee table. Because there is an open office layout, modular systems furniture was selected. The freestanding desking system with stackable screen for varying degrees of privacy.
Exterior improvements include brick cleaning and tuckpointing and new energy-efficient windows. A brick canopy on the east side was designed to match the original building. Shive-Hattery occupies 16,500 square feet of office space on the first and second floors and has an additional 4,000 square feet of basement storage area. A materials testing laboratory and space for survey and construction services staff are located on the first floor.
