A new 3,300-square-foot gymnasium eliminates the sharing of physical education and lunchroom space, which, although managed well, created scheduling conflicts and limitations on the school’s programs. In addition, physical education spaces frequently contained two classes in a space designed for one. The gymnasium is fully equipped for all physical education activities and has a more cushioned athletic floor for comfort and safety. The new gymnasium is about 25 percent larger than the original lunchroom, which greatly increases its usability and seating capacity for large assemblies and performances.
Along with the new gymnasium, other support spaces in the addition include new physical education storage/office space. This relieves pressure on rooms that were severely overcrowded. In addition, a new resource room improves service capability to students.
With completion of this project, overcrowding in the lunchroom has been alleviated by allowing for a longer lunch period, which requires fewer tables. Planning for project phasing was an integral part of the design process due to the site limitations and on-going school activities.
