Football Field
The University wanted to replace the worn out football field turf and the running track surface at the stadium. The new field surface, AstroPlay RR-XL turf, was installed over the existing asphalt base and drainage system. A rubber infill that complied with the Illinois Used Tire Recovery Program was added and a shock pad with a minimum of 10mm thickness was sewn in place. A combination of sewing and gluing was used to attach the turf. The University logo in the center of the field and the end zone markings were inlaid as were the yard line markers, numbers, directional arrows and out-of-bounds markings. The hash marks, kick-off mark, coaches' boxes, team boxes, and extra point mark were painted. All letters and numbers were glued in place. The field also had painted markings for high school play. Track
Illinois State University completed a renovation of all track and field surfaces in 2003. The original track synthetic surface (installed in late 1980's) was at its deteriorating stage and the 35-year-old asphalt subbase showed signs of pavement cracks and "birdbaths". The new track improvements included the construction of new 4" rubberized asphalt concrete subbase (up to maximum 20% weight of fine tire rubber crumb modifier) and recycled Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) granules for 8mm thick of polyurethane and SBR component built-up layers as known as Martin ISS 1000 synthetic track surface. The 8-lane running track is coated with elastomeric, a form of recycled tires, which will meet the requirements on the Illinois Recycled Tire grant.
