Shive-Hattery was retained by the University of Iowa to review the existing field drainage system at Kinnick Stadium and replacement design of the existing sand-based natural grass field with new synthetic turf. To leave the University options for the future, Shive-Hattery worked with the University to design the field base to accommodate constructing a sand-based natural turf at some point in the future while still providing adequate drainage and a solid base for the synthetic turf.
In the future, if the University chooses to switch back to a natural grass turf, the synthetic turf and the top 5" of rock would be removed. Additional USGA graded sand would be hauled in to build up the sand base to a minimum of 10". All of the new drainage system will remain intact with this approach.
Services included civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, landscape architecture and land survey services included a topographic survey of the field and conformance surveys during construction to verify grades.
