Excelsior Middle School Additions

Excelsior Middle School Additions

Marion, IA

After the evaluation of several master plan options, the school district selected a facilities development plan that the community would support through a bond referendum. This plan balanced the needs of the district's growth with the available resources.

As part of the district's grade level reconfiguration, the intermediate school was converted into a middle school with 1,350 students in grades 6-8. This project was constructed in two phases to meet the district's enrollment and construction phasing needs.

In phase 1, a 6,000-square-foot addition was designed in one month and constructed in three months. It had two classrooms, a foods laboratory and a technology education classroom. In phase 2, these areas were converted to two family life science classrooms and two technology education rooms. A 51,768-square-foot addition in phase 2 has 34 classrooms, science classrooms, grade level team resource centers and a technology education room. This phase also expanded core facilities including an auxiliary gym, locker rooms and cafeteria. Consistent with the middle school concept, the three classroom wings serve as small grade-level instructional units.
