Through the collaboration between Shive-Hattery; the developer, Liberty Growth; and the University of Iowa Community Medical Services, a new medical clinic prototype plan was designed that would implement a new primary care delivery model. The new system will improve patient privacy, reduce waiting time and increase patient satisfaction while at the same time increasing efficiency.
The 7,550 square foot clinic accommodates two physicians and a nurse practitioner, physician's assistant or medical student. Each provider will have three exam rooms and a consultation office. The plan includes separate staff and patient corridors with a central staff and physician work area. A general radiology room, a minor procedure space and support area including laboratory and staff work rooms are located around the perimeter of the core. Clearstory windows line the patient corridor to allow natural light to penetrate the building. The clinic also includes an optometry unit consisting of an eye exam clinic, an office for the optometrist, and an optical shop as well as a full service pharmacy with drive-up window.
The new building plan changes the way patient check in is handled-out of the view and earshot of other patrons. A medical assistant will greet the patient, collect co-pays, take the patient to a room via the patient corridor and conduct the initial medical evaluation. The physician will enter the exam room from the staff corridor. During the visit, the medical assistant enters the physician's comments and the exam results directly into the patient's computerized medical record. Labs will be drawn in the exam room. Prior to leaving the room the patient will be given any printouts of prescriptions or referral orders as well as their receipt for the visit.
