Shive-Hattery - Architecture Engineering Consulting Firm

Pella Regional Health Center

Pella, IA

Shive-Hattery was selected by Pella Regional Health Center to design the renovation of 16,500-square-foot surgery suite. Services included architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design. The project consisted of pre/post op, central sterile (CS), PACU, cysto, typical support areas and a new air handling unit (AHU) in the existing penthouse. There was 1,500 square feet of shell space designated for future surgery use. Shive-Hattery was hired in 2003 to expand operating room 1; this project expanded OR 2 and OR 3 to match OR 1. Two ORs remained in operation throughout the construction project.

The pre/post op area was remodeled to include 15 new hold/recovery rooms. The Cysto OR was relocated to create more room for pre/post op. The existing central sterile area was small and outdated; the new CS area was sized to handle the three ORs as well as a future fourth OR.

The multi-phased project also required a new 20,000 cfm AHU in the existing penthouse. The ductwork for this unit ran across the roof within a new enclosure because the building was built in 1960 and had limited ceiling space.

The project team included Graham Construction as the construction manager, The Baker Group as the mechanical contractor and Meninga Electric as the electrical contractor.
