Pella, IA
Having outgrown in-home hospice care, the Hospice of Pella wanted to create a welcoming home like atmosphere to enrich the stay of their terminal patients. This 11,000 square foot, wood framed structure utilizes vaulted ceilings and a rich accent of stained wood trim and doors to articulate the interior. Hidden cove lighting provides soft ambient light sensitive to the building’s uses. The cruciform shape lends itself to strong building access at each of the cardinal points all converging on a central nurse station. The nurse station is crowned with a stained wood “Halo” with hidden up lighting to further accentuate the soaring ceilings.
The exterior is clad with a maintenance free “Cedar Shake” style vinyl siding with accent trim and reveal boards embellishing the facades. Each patient room is equipped with a porch that wraps the exterior with a soft white balustrade. The main entrance is marked with a clad wood truss and exposed chandelier. The hips and gables supporting the hunter green roof allow the facility to blend nicely with the surrounding residential neighborhood.
The facilities main level has six full patient rooms, a nurse station, several support areas, and family living area with kitchen and bathing amenities. The walk-out basement provides a full office facility for the administrative staff complete with a meeting room and support spaces. Independent zones for environmental controls were implemented for added comfort between patient and office spaces. Finally, a full landscape plan offers additional layers of serenity while a composition of retaining walls allow transitions to sloping landscapes for the mutli-level facility.
