Broadlawns Medical Center

Des Moines, IA

In the fall of 2007, Shive-Hattery developed a facility master plan for Broadlawns Medical Center to provide updated space programming, develop site options, review mechanical and electrical infrastructure needs, and develop cost opinions for proposed options. From this master plan, a two-phase addition and renovation project evolved.

Phase I of the project was completed in 2011 and included design for infrastructure replacement, a new emergency department and walk-in clinic designed for 60,000 annual visits, a new main entrance and registration area, and extensive radiology renovations including the addition of a new MRI suite. Total project costs for the first phase were $15.6 million.

A new three-story medical office building (MOB) was designed and constructed in Phase II, with a connecting link allowing patients, physicians, and staff to pass comfortably between the hospital and MOB. In addition, the surgery department underwent renovations to add an orthopedic operating room and to expand pre- and post-operative care areas. Total Phase II project costs were $13 million and the project was completed in 2012.

Additional services included site topographic survey for the new medical office building, relocation of the existing helipad, replacement of the sanitary sewer main, looping of electrical feeders and additional pavement for parking as outlined and determined through the master planning process.
