The hospital renovated approximately 20,000 square feet of space on the second floor for inpatient psychiatric services. The project involved a gut and rebuild of an entire floor of the building which was built in 1947. The new unit has17 inpatient adult beds and four inpatient adolescent beds in separate units. Shive-Hattery's architectural and interior design team worked diligently with the medical center to develop a calming environment that also meets the specific needs of the anticipated patient population. The renovations met the design guidelines published by the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems NAPHS.
The project also included a bridge connector to the Physician Arts Plaza which houses outpatient psychiatric services. This enables the hospital to integrate inpatient and outpatient services through the use of shared space and staff.
