Westercamp Reclamation

Westercamp Reclamation

Mahaska County, IA

Due to the complex nature of the Westercamp reclamation project, thorough and careful analysis of the existing conditions was required to arrive at an effective solution. The drainage area for this project totals nearly 800 acres. The 50-year discharge will be in the range of 1000 cubic feet per second.

Complicating this project is the existing topography (wide basin) and the close proximity to the City of Beacon. In order to meet the goals of this project while addressing these concerns, the proposed design consisted of a series of stepped wetlands to minimize the dam heights, and to create an outstanding wetland habitat. The conceptual design includes four wetland pools with a 5-foot grade differential between each. The water level in each pool is controlled by a riser pipe with high flows passing over a concrete weir riprapped on both sides. This weir and riprap is critical with large volumes of water passing through the basin.
