North Liberty, IA
The growing community of North Liberty developed a new outdoor community gathering place for its residents. Shive-Hattery provided planning, site design, transportation and electrical engineering and landscape architecture services for a beautification project at the intersection of Highway 965 and Penn Street, North Liberty's main access to the interstate. The development will serve as a focal point and establish an exciting new image for the community.
The visual highlight of this area is a pond with three aeration fountains and a waterfall feature along one edge. The waterfall tumbles over limestone, beneath a footbridge and into the pond below allowing the opportunity for close engagement with the water's edge. Pumps recirculate the pond water back up to the waterfall, which is floodlit at night. In addition to its recreational purposes, the pond also provides storm water management for the surrounding mixed-use commercial/residential development.
An area around the pond was deeded to the city by the developer. Using this land, the city developed a perimeter trail with a pedestrian bridge across the pond, a fishing/access pier and seating areas. A trail also connects a residential subdivision to the north.
As the development and pond are located near busy Highway 965, a pedestrian tunnel is an integral part of the project. The tunnel enables residents and visitors to cross safely from the pond area to the civic center and school located on the opposite side of the highway.
