City High School Addition & Renovations

City High School Addition & Renovations

Iowa City, IA

To serve an increasing number of students and to relieve overcrowding, City High needed more space and better utilization of what they had. The 45,000 square foot addition provided 16 new classrooms, a new student commons, a state of the art new fitness center and circulation space to ease bottlenecks between the academic and physical education areas of the building.

Renovation of 30,000 square feet expanded and upgrade the media center to current standards upgraded classroom areas. Other renovations were energy conservation improvements in the form of new lighting and a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. Also included were fire and life safety improvements.

Shive-Hattery provided architectural and interior design; civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering; roof services; construction administration and construction observation

Significant complications were inherent in the project and were successfully overcome. The new addition is connected to the original 1939 building and six subsequent additions. Furthermore, the original school and subsequent additions were built at varying floor levels. The result is an integration of these disparate elements and a cohesive exterior appearance that blends it all together.
