Shive-Hattery provided environmental graphic design services for a signage system for the James W. Cownie Sports Complex, a facility of Des Moines Parks and Recreation that includes soccer and baseball facilities. The project included the development of a family of signage components to:
- Assist visitors in safely and efficiently finding their way to each complex
- To identify/announce each complex
- To provide orientation and wayfinding for vehicles and pedestrians within each complex
The signage components included directional signage for vehicles approaching the complex, entrance signage, internal directional signage, and field identification.
As part of the entrance signage, a sculptural feature of a soccer ball on a pedestal was designed and fabricated in Corten® steel. The soccer ball is 10 feet in diameter on a pedestal approximately 25 feet high. The project also included the creation of a graphic theme, logo development, signage design, siting of signage components, and the preparation of fabrication documents.
