Grand Rounds Scenic Byway

Grand Rounds Scenic Byway

Minneapolis, MN

The Grand Rounds Scenic Byway encompasses over 50 miles of parkways and parks and bicycle and pedestrian trails. It includes a wealth of natural, historical, cultural, scenic and recreational resources and is recognized as the nation's first totally urban scenic byway. First envisioned more than 100 years ago, it is the centerpiece of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and was given National Scenic Byway status in 1998.

David Dahlquist and Michael Lanning prepared the natural and cultural resource interpretation master plan for the Grand Rounds including resource assessment, mapping development of communication network, interpretive media and signage recommendations. They have also prepared final design for information kiosks, directional standards, and web site and print media. A primary focus involves the design of wayfinding signage for trail users and identifying the means for connecting trails with neighborhoods and other regional trails.

The MPRB also retained Shive-Hattery to prepare grant applications (over $1 million in federal funding secured to date through applications prepared) and to provide general counsel to the Park Board on operations, budget and management opportunities and challenges throughout the installation processes.

This project received a 2001 Honor Award from the Iowa Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects. The organization recognizes the highest quality projects in planning, design and construction.

In 2007, the Federal Highway Administration awarded this project an Environmental Excellence Award for Excellence in Scenic Byways. This program recognizes efforts to impore the nation's quality of life by blending environmental protection and, as possible, environmental enhancement with efforts to meet growing transportation needs.
