Shive-Hattery provided mechanical, electrical and structural design for the conversion of a former Maytag building into the new Career Academy building for Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Newton, IA. The 40,000-square-foot building addition brings classrooms from the Ankeny campus closer to those living in the Newton area. The programs available through the new facility also help DMACC build relationships with the local high schools so they can promote dual credit programs to high school students who wish to further their education before graduation.
The building was a gift from Maytag to DMACC and had to be used in accordance with a donor agreement, which created some design challenges. The Shive-Hattery team updated the infrastructure to be sustainable for years into the future and designed new construction to work with the existing features of the building. This building now serves multiple learning disciplines including carpentry, tooling, automotive repair and welding, all of which expand educational opportunities for growth in manufacturing fields.
