Franklin Geothermal System

Franklin Geothermal System

Cedar Rapids, IA

An open-loop geothermal heat pump system was designed for replacement of the HVAC system in this 146,000-square-foot middle school that was built in 1923. The geothermal heat pump system consists of a groundwater well coupled to the heat pump system, 300-foot-deep wells, and 400-tons of cooling capacity.

All improvements were done in a manner to provide state-of-the-art upgrades and minimize the visual impact on the district's oldest buildings.

The project was designed to be accomplished in phases to provide minimum impact on the education processes. The work was coordinated with other building improvement projects scheduled during the same construction period.
