Cedar Rapids, IA
Shive-Hattery was hired to do an assessment of the District’s elementary playgrounds to identify alternatives for improvement and retain funding for the district’s Early Childhood Program. During this assessment phase, Shive-Hattery met with early education providers to determine how the playgrounds were utilized and how they can act as an extension of the indoor learning environment rather than just a place for recess. Several basic considerations were identified that could be incorporated into the playground to make them Early Childhood Outdoor Classrooms. Early Childhood Outdoor Classrooms
address the individuality of each school and create a challenging and fun learning experience; making them an invaluable asset for the District.
The Outdoor Classroom Model develops consistency and equity while providing a process for continual improvement. The model combines and balances safety, security and learning into a total experience for school and community playgrounds; as well as city, county, and state parks.
