Due to an increase in demand for chilled water on the University's West Campus, the chilled water distribution system needed to be expanded. As part of this project, approximately 2,560 linear feet of 36-inch chilled water supply and return lines, as well as approximately 1,030 linear feet of 24-inch chilled water supply and return lines, were installed. Included in the 24-inch chilled water piping is 220 linear feet that were installed in an existing utility tunnel and tied into existing 24-inch chilled water piping.
The new chilled water lines extend the 36-inch service lines from the West Campus Chilled Water Plant through the west side of Kinnick Stadium and into Melrose Avenue. Additionally, these lines tie into the 24-inch distribution lines in South Grand Avenue that serve the Pharmacy Building.
The design of this project included a number of unique factors for a utility installation project. Of these, the most critical was maintaining continuous traffic flow on Melrose Avenue throughout the project. A major arterial street, Melrose Avenue is the main road connecting the east and west portions of Iowa City. As a result of this constraint, it was necessary to bore and jack 120 linear feet of the 24-inch piping and 36-inch casing pipe under Melrose Avenue and 340 linear feet of the 36-inch piping and 48-inch casing pipe under the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Hawkins Drive. By boring and jacking, traffic flow was maintained without disruptions. Additionally, construction phasing was required to facilitate open cut installation within Melrose Avenue while maintaining continuous traffic flow and access to drives and streets off of Melrose Avenue.
