Iowa City, IA
This project consisted of a base project and five additional alternate projects. The base project included approximately 3,800 linear feet of 36-inch chilled water supply and return lines from existing 20-inch termini near Newton road to existing 30-inch mains under North Madison Street. Because of various uses for land where the water pipe runs, three different installation methods were used. Approximately 1,700 linear feet of these lines were installed using traditional open-cut methods. Over 1,400 linear feet were installed using bore-and-jack methods. The final approximately 640 linear feet was installed across the Iowa River using cofferdams and open-cutting with casing pipes and piers to bedrock. The base project also include re-grading and irrigation of Hubbard Park.
The five alternate projects were:
- Approximately 950 linear feet of 30-inch chilled water supply and return lines from existing 24-inch mains north of Eckstein Medical Research Building to existing 30-inch mains west of Medical Education and Research Facility.
- Approximately 800 linear feet of 30-inch chilled water supply and return lines from existing 30-inch mains south of Medical Education and Research Facility to the end point of the 36-inch mains included in the base project. This project also included storm sewer improvements.
- Replacement of asphalt paving in the circle drive near Nursing Building with new PCC pavement with integral curb and gutter and related landscape improvements.
- Installation of 24-inch diameter steel casing piping for future water main across the river. Also included were all steel plates, welding, and detailing required to install this additional casing pipe across the river with the chilled water casing pipes.
- Installation of 16-inch diameter restrained joint DIP in 24-inch steel casing and extending the 16-inch water main beyond the limits of the river bank.
